The SUHSD complies with and is governed by state law regarding medication on campus. Education Code 49423 states that any pupil who is required to take medication during the school day may be assisted by the school nurse or other designated school personnel if:

  • The school receives a written statement from a physician detailing the method, amount and time schedules by which the medication is to be taken

  • A written statement from the parent or guardian of the pupil is on file indicating a desire that the school assists the pupil with medication. This is necessary even for over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, etc.

  • An emergency management plan will be developed by the district nurse for medications such as epi-pens, inhalers, and insulin. Parents must notify the school site of any serious chronic health conditions and potential emergencies such as diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, and life-threatening food or insect allergies.
