District Sustainability

ABOUT OUR DISTRICT'S SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE

The SUHSD Sustainability Committee (SSC) is a student-led committee that involves students and staff across the district, in addition to other relevant stakeholders.

The committee began to take shape in November 2020 with a petition to declare a climate emergency in the district, which got over 700 signatures. We then met with other organizations around the district, such as green clubs, the Sequoia District Teacher’s Association (SDTA), the Youth Commission, and county offices to gain more support.

In April 2021, the district board unanimously passed the motions to:
  • Declare climate emergency
  • Set sustainability goals
  • Resolve to evaluate progress in 12-18 months

This committee was constructed to work towards these resolutions as a supportive and educative community.

This year’s Sustainability Committee has a Clean Energy subcommittee, a Zero Waste subcommittee, and an Environmental Literacy subcommittee.

VISION:

SUHSD school communities are models of sustainability and climate resiliency that equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values to create a sustainable, climate-resilient, and environmentally equitable world.

BIG PICTURE GOAL:

By 2025, every SUHSD high school has sustainability coordinator(s) to ensure the continuation of this movement. They have also developed and begun implementation of a plan with concrete goals for sustainability and climate resiliency efforts throughout the campus, curriculum, community, and culture.

SPECIFIC GOALS:

  • Campus (facilities and operations): SUHSD has made district-wide capital investments in modernizing facilities, implementing sustainable food systems, implementing clean energy and transport, and promoting campus biodiversity to foster sustainable and clean operations in learning environments.
  • Curriculum and Instruction: Across all SUHSD schools, climate literacy and environmental justice is integrated into curriculum and instruction in every grade level, and students are provided with skills to enter clean energy and sustainability areas of study or employment.
  • Community and Culture: The SUHSD community cultivates a culture that addresses eco-anxiety by providing emotional support services and volunteer opportunities with both school and local organizations. Students and adults are involved in promoting sustainable policies and practices at schools while  providing sustainability leadership positions.
