FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is a standard application protocol that uses the Internet’s TCP/IP protocol to transfer files from one computer to another.

FTP is a very common process today. FTP is commonly used to transfer web pages from the creator’s computer to the server where the web site is hosted.  Also FTP is used to download programs and files to your computer from a server.

National Educational Technology Standards

Standard 6. Technology Operations and Concepts

  • Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. Students:
    • understand and use technology systems.
    • select and use applications effectively and productively.
    • troubleshoot systems and applications.
    • transfer current knowledge to learning of new technologies.

Put files...

  • In the Files panel (Window > Files), select the files to upload. Usually you select these in the Local view, but you may select the corresponding files in the Remote view if you prefer.
  • Do one of the following to put the file on the remote server:
    • Click the Put button in the Files panel toolbar.
    • Right-click (Windows) or Control‑click (Macintosh) the file in the Files panel, then select Put from the context menu.
  • If the file hasn’t been saved, a dialog box appears (if you set this preference in the Site category of the Preferences dialog box) allowing you to save the file before putting it on the remote server. Click Yes to save the file or No to put the previously saved version on the remote server.
  • Click Yes to upload dependent files along with the selected files, or click No to refrain from uploading dependent files. The default is to not upload dependent files. You can set this option at Edit > Preferences > Site.

Files Panel

  • When you view sites, files, or folders in the Files panel, you can change the size of the viewing area, and expand or collapse the Files panel. When the Files panel is collapsed, it displays the contents of the local site, the remote site, or the testing server as a list of files. When expanded, it displays the local site and either the remote site or testing server. The Files panel can also display a visual site map of the local site.

For Dreamweaver sites, you can also customize the Files panel by changing the view—either your local or remote site—that appears by default in the collapsed panel.
