Goodban COLLEGE & CAREER CENTER NEWS from Ms. Ignaitis: NEW: - PSAT Information: I have answered a lot of email about who should take the PSAT and what happens to the results of the exam after it is scored so I would like to address these concerns to all: First - Who should take the exam? The exam was originally meant for juniors to take in October as a tool to help them study for the SAT reasoning exam that should be taken in the spring of their junior year. If a junior scores well on it he/she could become a National Merit Scholar. A few years ago, CollegeBoard standardized the exam so that sophomores could look at their scores against only other sophomores giving them a sense of where they stand among their peers. Again, the PSAT is only a practice exam to be a tool of study for the SAT. In these more competitive times, families are deciding to have their children spend more time preparing for these exams. The CollegeBoard website allows students who have taken the PSAT access to specific studying resources for each individual exam taker called "MyRoad". Second - Where does this information go BESIDES the student? Students can check a box that will send the information that they put on the answer sheet to colleges/universities for recruiting purposes. A student could state that he/she has a 4.0 GPA and wants to go to college on the answer key along with his/her address this information is processed through the recruiting offices who are always looking for the best prospects. They are not saving scores. Here is some voices from admissions offices: Yale " No, we do not evaluate students based on their PSAT scores." Cal head admissions officer told counselors at the UC conference that UCs don't even have room to save SAT scores for more than one year because of the volume of applicants and data they receive each year. Stanford put on a mock admission event where counselors looked at complete applications and where taken step by step through the admissions process, PSAT were not part of the process. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at tignaiti@seq.org The deadline to sign up for the PSAT is this Friday, Sept 18th. Checks can be made out to Sequoia High School for $25.00 to be paid to the school treasurer. Fee waivers are available to juniors who receive free or reduced lunch. Thanks. McVerry COLLEGE & CAREER CENTER NEWS from Ms. Ignaitis: ONGOING: - PSAT Information: I have answered a lot of email about who should take the PSAT and what happens to the results of the exam after it is scored so I would like to address these concerns to all: First - Who should take the exam? Thanks. The cost is $25.00 to be paid to the Treasurer's Office by tomorrow - Fri., Sept 18th. Payment can also be made on Back to School Night - SEPT 17th in either in either the Treasurer's Office or the College/Career Center (room 45). Checks are made out to Sequoia High School. The PSAT was made for juniors but it suggested that sophomores take it as well. Freshmen can take it but are only able to compare themselves to other sophomores throughout the nation. The most common reasons for taking the PSAT/NMSQT according to the Collegeboard website are to: *Receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. You can then focus your preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice. *See how your performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to college. *Enter the competition for scholarships from National Merit Scholarship (grade 11). *Help prepare for the SAT. You can become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions you will see on the SAT. *Receive information from colleges when you check "yes" to Student Search Service If you have further questions, please contact Ms Ignaitis at tignaiti@seq.org - FREE PRACTICE SAT TEST and REVIEW/STRATEGY SESSION run by the Princeton Review on Oct 3rd and 10th. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at tignaiti@seq.org The deadline to sign up for the PSAT is TODAY - Friday, Sept 18th. Checks can be made out to Sequoia High School for $25.00 to be paid to the school treasurer. Fee waivers are available to juniors who receive free or reduced lunch. Thanks.
