H SCHOOL.

A MESSAGE FROM THE SUHSD SUPERINTENDENT:

Dear Parents,
 =

While I know your principal has been keeping you apprised of the current fi=
nancial situation at your child's school, I wanted to take this opportunity=
to share some additional comments. =

 =

Throughout all of our planning, our focus is firmly fixed on preserving our=
quality educational program. Academic excellence and the quality of the s=
tudent experience in our schools is our number one priority. At the Distri=
ct Office, we will shoulder the greatest percentage of cuts, and we are ful=
ly committed to making reductions at the schools as far from the classroom =
as possible. =

 =

Please be assured that the academic and student enrichment programs in the =
schools in the Sequoia district will continue to be excellent, innovative a=
nd robust. Core academic programs, and athletic and performing arts progra=
ms, will remain in tact. Class sizes may increase, but we will do everythi=
ng we can to preserve the integrity of the instructional program.
 =

We appreciate your continuing engagement and support during this process. =
We know you appreciate the serious challenges facing our state's schools. =
Despite being one of the world's largest economies, California is now dead =
last in the U.S. in terms of per-pupil funding (we had been 47 out of 50 un=
til recently). =

 =

Although the state budget has finally passed, there are still a number of m=
oving targets, such as the uncertainties of the May 19 special election and=
its effect on the new state budget. At this juncture, we also do not know=
the level of funding coming to our district from the federal stimulus pack=
age, or the outcome of the county's current reassessment of property values=
of all homes sold since January 2002. As developments unfold over the com=
ing weeks and months, your principal will keep you updated.
 =

Please be reminded that, despite the current uncertainties and challenges, =
there is reason to be hopeful. The schools in the Sequoia district are ste=
llar. Our faculty and professional support staff are distinguished. Our f=
acilities and technology are exceptional. You, and other members of the lo=
cal community, are engaged and supportive of us. We're going to harness al=
l of these strengths to get to the other side of our current fiscal difficu=
lties, and I believe we will emerge even stronger and better than we are to=
day. We know you and your students are counting on us.
 =

Thank you for your time, and thank you for all that you do to contribute to=
the excellence of your child's school.
 =

Sincerely,
Pat Gemma, Superintendent
Sequoia Union High School District =

COLLEGE & CAREER CENTER NEWS from Ms. Ignaitis:
Ongoing:
- AP Exams are Near! If you are planning on taking an AP Exam this year, p=
lease sign up with Ms. Ignaitis by March 20th. The exam fee this year is $8=
8.00. You can pay the total fee at the time you sign up or a deposit if ne=
cessary. If you are eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch, fee waivers are ava=
ilable but the deposit is required. A copy of your taxes or a copy of Free=
or Reduce Lunch eligibility letter you received from the District is requi=
red to receive a fee waiver. Email Ms. Ignaitis for more details tignait=
i at seq.org =

NOTE! It is the responsibility of IB students to state a conflict in the te=
sting schedules at the time of registration because alternative test must b=
e ordered separately.

- The Stanford Educational Studies Program hosts an event called Splash wit=
h enrichment classes for middle and high school students. Students can take=
a variety of classes-from painting to quantum physics, all taught by Stanf=
ord students and affiliates. This is a unique enrichment opportunity for st=
udents, set on the beautiful Stanford campus, and can also inspire and moti=
vate students for college education by allowing them to interact with Stanf=
ord students. =

Our Spring event will be held this year on April 4-5, between 10am-6pm on b=
oth days, and registration will open to students on March 6th. Although we =
have not finalized our class list yet, an example of the over 100 classes o=
ffered in the Fall can be found at: http://stanfordesp.org/learn/Splash/200=
8_Fall/catalog . The registration fee is $40 for both days to cover room fe=
es and administrative costs, but a discount of $20 is given for siblings, a=
nd financial aid is available (just email stanfordesp at gmail.com ). =

Students can register online at stanfordesp.org starting March 10th. =

- SAT Subject Exams: The UC system will stop requiring the two subject are=
a exams for the fall Class of 2012 entering college freshmen. Private univ=
ersities have not changed their requirements, so families of Sequoia's grad=
uating class of 2012 ONLY need to look at EACH INDIVIDUAL COLLEGE to find t=
he requirements for admissions. Every school has their own individual poli=
cies. =

Have a college question? Please email Ms. Ignaitis at tignaiti at seq.org =
