Owens became a legend at the 1936 Olympics In Munich when he won four gold medals under the watchful eye of an angry Adolf Hitler. Prior to the games, Hitler had bragged that the world would take note of his Aryan Athletes and the American Black would be trounced at every turn. Instead, Owens not only beat the Germans but also gained their respect. The widespread publicity surrounding Hitler?s refusal to present Owens with his medals only increased the athlete?s fame. Good job Kayla! **** NEW ITEMS **** THINGS YOU WANT TO KNOW * QUOTES/FACTS IN HONOR OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH: Countee Cullen , 1903-1946, Writer, Poet Countee Cullen was one of the strongest voices associated with the Harlem Renaissance, the flowering of black art and literature on New York City in the 1920?s. In 1925, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from New York University and published his first book of poems, Color. After receiving his masters degree from Harvard University, Cullen became an editor and critic and later wrote plays and novels, but it was his poetry that singled him out. Universal themes such as love, religion, and death, Cullen believed in the richness and importance of his African American heritage and deftly applied traditional forms of verse, using melodic meter and rhyme, to African American themes.
