THE BIG BEAR RUN NEEDS YOU!!!
Volunteers needed the morning of Sunday May 4th for the 3rd annual Menlo-Atherton High School Big Bear Run. The BBR is looking for course monitors to cheer and direct runners along the 5k course in Lindenwood. Time commitment is approximately 2 hours. Volunteer check-in is at 8:15, finishing by 10:00AM. Please say you will help cheer on your student by contacting Cindy Newton (Stanske) at newton_c at sbcglobal.net or 650-327-2201.

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR BIG BEAR RUN SPONSORS TO DATE!
The Big Bear Run could not take place without the support of so many M-A families and community businesses. All our race sponsors will receive their designated free registration forms in the mail next week. Please complete and return the forms so that we can give you your t-shirts and race packets in advance. If you would still like to sponsor the event, it is not too late - now is your last chance to see your name printed on the back of the popular Big Bear Run t-shirts. The t-shirts go to print on April 8th, so please contact Michele Culhane, michculhane at pacbell.net, about sponsorship opportunities ASAP. Otherwise, support M-A athletics by joining in the Big Bear Run fun on Sunday May 4. Look for a registration form in Trivocus, download a form at www.m-aboosters.org, or register on-line at www.active.com. Thanks again for your support!!

SLEEP AND PERFORMANCE LESSON GOES OUT TO STUDENT BODY
On Tuesday, nearly the entire student body participated in a 20 minute mini-lesson during 4th period classes (a few classes will be catching up with the lesson later in the week). Teachers led discussions on three situations related to adolescent sleep and its effect on performance â academic, athletic and energy/mood/physical health. This lesson was developed for M-A by Stanford teaching assistants in the Sleep and Dreams course under the guidance of Dr. William Dement as well as Dr. Mark Rosekind of Alertness Solutions. Look for your studentâ s handout from the lesson and see what information is new for you. The content will be available soon on the M-A Teen Sleep website (link from M-A website home page).

The next two sleep education lessons coming up are:
April 1 â Alert Behind the Wheel: Drowsy Driving Prevention
April 8 â To Sleep, Not to Breathe: The Sleep Apnea Risk

M-A Sleep Ambassadors (14 members of the junior class) are participating in their 4th period class discussions and are actively involved as liaisons with teachers across the campus who are teaching the lessons. Thank you, Sleep Ambassadors, for your support role in our Teen Sleep Education Program! (Our Sleep Ambassadors are: Katie Blawie, Chris Fitzgerald, Kaitlin Fronberg, Nick Hurn. Tiffany Kung, Sam Peirce, Sara Jewell, Raissa Masket, Emily Van Rheenen, Yu Kambe, Clarence Lal, Jeffrey Lin, Brittany Margot and Brooke Weisenfluh).

SOFTBALL
PAL Ocean Division League play has started and the Varsity Softball Team has a 1-1 record. The first game was with Terra Nova and M-A lost 12-2. Sophomore Tami Vujovich had 2 hits and drove in 2 runs. Then it was onto San Mateo and the Varsity came out with a purpose. Playing their best game of the year, they defeated San Mateo 9-0. Sophomore pitcher Tami Vujovich pitched a perfect game until 2 outs in the 6th inning - then gave up the only hit that San Mateo would get in the top of the seventh, while striking out 8. The bats came alive with 2 home runs - 3 runs scored and 5 RBI's from Sophomore Tami Vujovich - and 2 triples and 3 RBI's from Senior Sarah Black - along with 2 hits from each Freshman Tess Cain and Senior Maria Patino.

BASEBALL
The varsity baseball team defeated Gunn Monday night 8-6. Michael Masket continued his torrid hitting, going 4-4 with two triples and two doubles.

GOLF
Our undefeated Bears suffered their first regular season loss to Carlmont on Tuesday afternoon (3/25) at Sharon Heights with a match score of 206 to 200. Even so, M-A's senior Jake Hall Toy shot an impressive 1 over par 37. The Bears are now 2 and 1 in regular season play, and in 2nd place in the PAL Bay Division right behind Carlmont.

SWIMMING
The Swim Bears were formidable in their meet against Carlmont, with all 4 teams winning handily. Varsity Girls were led by Sarah Winters (200 Free 2:01.17 CCS, 500 Free 5:31.43 CCS) and Morgan Leech (50 Free 26.42 and 100 Free 57.67). This Dynamic Duo was also on the winning 200 and 400 Free relay teams, together with Hannah Breen and Becca Dorst, that posted CCS times. Emily Dorst won the 100 Breast (1:19.26). Varsity Boys posted 5 CCS times including a twosome from Chris Kelvie (200 Free 1:52.40 and 100 Free 49.22), one each from Kai Masuda (200 IM 2:08.46) and Richard Hong (500 Free 4:59.33), and the Medley of Scott Swartz, Richard Hong, Jason Kwok, and Eric Wright (1:48.87 CCS). Next meet is Thursday, April 3rd at 3pm when the Bears host Half Moon Bay.

Go Bears. Grrrr.
