TENNIS
Congratulations M-A Girls tennis for an excellent season. In the first round of CCS, Menlo-Atherton traveled to Gilroy to take on League Champ, San Benito. For only the second time this season, M-A was the underdog. As they have done all year, the Bears took it to San Benito with no mercy! By the end of the afternoon, the Bears, led by Marietta Tuionetoa, Marjorie Adams, Paige Keating, Matilda Ekman, Jordyn Fantuzzi, Julia Peck, Heidi Galbraith, Anna Murveit and Emma Sharer earned their place in the CCS quarterfinals for the second consecutive year. M-A flexed their muscles, showed their PAL power, dispatching their overmatched opponents, 6-1.
Then, in a CCS quarterfinal rematch with 2nd seeded Archbishop Mitty, who like all the private schools recruit players from all over the Bay Area, the Bears were determined to improve upon last years 6-1 CCS quarterfinal loss. And improve they did...M-A #1, sophomore Marietta Tuionetoa took on one of the nation's top players in Mitty senior Taylor Davis. Davis was talking to herself and looking like she was losing, before finally pulling out the match. M-A #2, senior Marjorie Adams quickly dispatched Mitty's #2 in two sets. At #1 doubles, M-A's tandem of senior Heidi Galbraith and junior Julia Peck, after losing the first set and when it looked like the match would go to Mitty, staged the finest comeback in M-A tennis history, taking the 3rd set tiebreaker to win the match. Despite such a promising start, Mitty, ultimately, was too strong, taking the remaining matches and with them the victory.
M-A finishes the season with the CCS Individuals in 2 weeks with PAL Champs Marietta Tuionetoa and Marjorie Adams entered as the 4th seed. You go, girls!
