DROWSINESS IS RED ALERT!

Here is what your students learned from the Stanford Sleep and Dreamers on Tuesday:

--Average teens need more than 9 hours of sleep per night for optimal heath and performance

--Most teens carry a significant sleep debt

--Naps can help reduce sleep debt, and for that matter, so can getting more sleep at night

--Teens have a natural shift in their biological clock making it more difficult to fall asleep in the earlier nighttime hours and more difficult to wake up early in the morning.

--Driving while drowsy is very dangerous!

Ask your kids for additional information—they all received handouts they can share with you. For more resources on teen sleep, go to www.sleepfoundation.org. And don’t forget to move your clocks up an hour on Sunday.

GET YOUR NAME ON OUR SHIRT

If you would like to help sponsor the Big Bear Run, there is still time to get your name or corporate logo on the t-shirt and registration forms. Make your check for $250, $500, $1000, $2500 or more payable to M-A Athletic Boosters and mail to: M-A Boosters/Bear Run, P.O. Box 1288, Menlo Park, 94025. Hurry, though, because the deadline is today. Questions? Contact Kim at kyoung at moragne.com

DANCE TEAM SHOW

You will be very sorry if you miss the fourth annual M-A Dance Team Show tomorrow, March 9 at 6:30 pm in the practice gym. Students can buy tickets from any dance team member for $5 or at the door for $7; adult tickets cost $8. Last year, this event sold out, so best to get your tickets ahead of time.

IF YOU THINK YOU BOUGHT A YEARBOOK AT ARENA CHECK-IN…

…you may want to check your records. Yearbook did NOT have a booth at arena check in this past August, so you may be recalling purchases made in prior years. Fortunately, it is not too late (yet). Get a copy for $70 by downloading an order form from the mabears.org website or ordering online at http://www.YearbooksOnSale.com. Prices will rise after March 14, and no checks will be accepted after that date.

AP TEST REGISTRATION

Sign-ups for the AP tests will be Wednesday, March 14 and Thursday, March 15 at lunch only, in the food court outside the J building. The cost per test is $85, and checks should be payable to M-AHS. You can write one check for multiple tests; cash is also accepted.

If paying by check, write the following information on the front of the check: student’s first and last name and AP test names (be specific). There is a $15 cancellation fee per test if your student decides to withdraw after registration.

Students who need financial assistance must see Monique in the front office prior to registering.

ENVISIONING OUR FUTURE

The Sequoia Union High School District invites the community to help create a new vision statement for the district. There are still two sessions that you can attend to provide input.

March 20 from 6 to 8:15 p.m. in the district office at 480 James Street in Redwood City.

March 24 from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. in East Palo Alto. (You will receive information about the location when you RSVP).

If you would like to attend either session, you need to RSVP to Pat Gemma at pgemma at seq.org

SUMMER IS ON THE WAY

Spring is here, which means it is time to order your students’ summer reading books. Your students should have received reading lists and order forms from their English teachers; you can also find the form in the March Trivocis or download it from www.mabears.org. Complete the forms and return them to teachers by Friday, March 23. Students are required to read these books and will need them for assignments in English next year. For questions, please email Virginia Weiss at weissland at comcast.net

FIRST ANNUAL BAY AREA GAP YEAR FAIR

A gap year gives high school graduates an opportunity for personal growth, potentially leading to clearer direction and greater motivation for college or whatever path the student pursues. The gap year may include travel, cultural immersion, directed study, service or conservation projects, internship opportunities, and more. The conference will be held at Albany High School in Albany, on March 24 from noon to 3 p.m. For more info, contact Carolie Sly at csly at dynamy.org

GREASE IS THE WORD

Dress up in your favorite 50s costume and enjoy the fast pace and pulsating tunes of the musical Grease with stars Myles Rowland and Amanda Tachics. This all-student production, directed by Jenni Brandon with assistance from Paolo Lopez and choreography by Sam Steele, will be the last musical staged in the soon-to-be-demolished J building.

The show will premiere on Thursday, March 29 at 7 p.m., with repeat performances on Friday, March 30 at 7 p.m, Saturday, March 31 at 7 p.m., and Thursday, April 5 at 5 p.m. (April 5 is Open House, so you can get a terrific parking space and watch a great show too.) There will also be a special understudy matinee on Saturday, March 31 at 2 p.m.

Don’t miss it! Get your tickets ($8 regular; $5 matinee) by contacting April Paye at apaye at seq.

ENGINEERING OPEN HOUSE

Twice a year, San Jose State holds an excellent engineering open house. Even if your students are not interested in attending San Jose State, they can explore varied engineering fields and see incredible student projects, perhaps learning which branch of engineering is most tempting. The event will take place on Saturday, April 21, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Registration information is available at http://enrollmentservices.sjsu.edu/asr.

JUNIOR/SENIOR PROM…

Do you or your business have an old computer that you do not need any more? We will securely erase all the data, refurbish it, and send it home with a deserving M-A student who has no access to a computer at home. Help clear out your garage and bridge the digital divide! Contact Sue Kayton, kayton at alum.mit.edu, 650-853-1711.
