ALGEBRA RECOVERY

Did your students get a D or an F in algebra? Make sure they know about
the algebra recovery program, offered during 7th period and after school
in room C-4.

TRUE VISIONARIES

Make a real difference in the lives of M-A students who need vision
correction by driving them to Lenscrafters 2000 in Menlo Park for
Wednesday appointments. Typical time commitment is from 2pm-4pm.
Please contact Margie Lawrence for more info at mlawrence at mppc.org or
650.323.8656

FROM THE VICE PRINCIPAL

Please remember to drive slowly and cautiously in the student parking
lots and on the main driveway. Look carefully both ways when you pull
out onto Ringwood or Oak Grove. Pay attention when you drive, and be
especially careful to keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the
vehicle in front of you to avoid a rear end collision.

LAST DAY TO ADD A CLASS

Tomorrow, January 26, is the last day to add a class. Your student
needs to head to the guidance office immediately if any changes are
needed.

A DEVASTATING CRISIS

Mass genocide is occurring right now in the Darfur region of Sudan. Each
day the people in Darfur face murder, kidnapping, and rape. But you can
make a difference in the lives of the 2 million people who are in
desperate need of help.

Come to an informational gathering about helping the victims in Darfur
on Friday, January 26 in the J building. Stanford students will be
discussing the issues, and there will be a fundraising raffle with
awesome prizes and proceeds aiding Darfur victims.

IS YOUR STUDENT PLANNING TO PLAY A SPORT IN THE SPRING?

If your students are even thinking about trying out for the swim team,
boys tennis, boys golf, badminton, baseball, softball, lacrosse, or
track and field teams this spring, they need to pick up sports packets
from the assistant vice principal's office. All student athletes,
including those currently playing a winter sport, need to submit their
sports packets by Friday, January 26. No exceptions! Tryouts for
spring sports begin on Monday, January 29, and are open only to students
who have completed and turned in their packets.

Note: all athletes must have medical clearance forms signed by their
doctors. This is often the hardest form to complete, as it usually
entails a trip to the doctor and perhaps a checkup. So if your student
has not had a physical within the last year, make that appointment
pronto and avoid last minute heartbreak.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE NIGHT

Students and parents are invited to join us on February 1 from 6 to 8
p.m. in the J building to eat free pizza, speak with representatives of
local community colleges, and listen to a panel discussion on student
life, transfer, career programs and short degrees, financial aid, and
getting started at community college. You must RSVP to Alice Kleeman at
AAKleeman at aol.com or 322-5311 x 5141.

PARENTS OF JUNIORS

The deadline to register for the March SAT is February 2. Registration
materials are available in the Career Center or from
www.collegeboard.com. Contact Alice Kleeman (see info in previous

MORE COLLEGE HAPPENINGS

DeAnza College sponsors a Black College Fair on Saturday, February 3
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the school auditorium. This annual event
hosts representatives from more than 20 colleges that have traditionally
served Black students.

Down the road at Foothill, same time, same day (February 3 from 10 to 2)
students can receive free financial aid information and help filling out
the FAFSA at a Cash for College workshop.

CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP FEDERATION

California Scholarship Federation applications will be accepted during
lunch in front of B-22 the week of February 5. Students need to bring
their transcripts or report cards (not Communicado printouts) along with
$3.

 FAST, FURIOUS, AND FUN

We need your help managing all those California Scholarship Federation
applications! Spend an hour on campus working with students on one of
the following days: Monday, February 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.,
Tuesday, February 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, February
7, from 10:50 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Thursday, February 8, from 10:50 a.m.
to 12:15 p.m., and/or Friday, February 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Email Alice Hom at dnahom at aol.com to volunteer.

GETTING READY FOR COLLEGE 101

Your sophomores, juniors, and seniors may want to attend the Skyline
College workshops on Saturday, February 10 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Workshops will focus on paying for college, writing personal statements
for college applications, choosing a career path, ensuring college
success, and more. University representatives will be present to answer
questions.  The cost is $12 for preregistered students, $15 at the door;
the fee includes lunch and materials. Tell your students to stop by the
guidance counselors' office or career center for more information.

FINISH STRONG: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We invite all parents to donate a few hours to support the senior
class's special challenge event, Finish Strong, scheduled for Tuesday,
February 20 and Thursday, February 22 from 7:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. With
your help leading small groups or working on event logistics, we can
make a real difference in the lives of our own young adults. Choose the
day you would like to help, try to attend an optional training session
on Saturday, February 10 from 9 to 10 a.m., and email Margie Lawrence at
mlawrence at mppc.org, Judy Hood at summerhood at sbcglobal.net, or Stacy
Fredericksen at sfisherfred at yahoo.com to get more info or sign up.

STRESSED OUT STUDENTS (AND PARENTS)

The M-A PTA invites you to attend an evening with Denise Pope, founder
of Stanford University's SOS (Stressed Out Students) project, on
February 12 at 7 p.m. in the J building. She will be joined by a panel
of M-A students to discuss the SOS project, the effects of stress on
students, and the ways in which we can work to help our students deal
with pressure. You will also find out about M-A's own PTA-sponsored SOS
Task Force. For more information, go to
http://sosconference.stanford.edu/index.htm or read a recent fact sheet
on Stressed Out Students at
http://sosconference.stanford.edu/sos-fact-sheet.pdf.

RSVP to HVinick at seq.org or 322-5311 x 5114

WIILLY WONKA WINTER FORMAL

Save the date for the winter formal: February 23. Tickets go on sale
for PAL students on January 22 through January 26. Toil for Tickets is
available for students who want to earn their winter formal tickets.
They need to sign up with Mrs. Todd in B-20. Each hour of work for a
staff member outside class hours earns a $10 credit. Students should
not let the lack of dollars stand in the way of dancing the night away.

students. This is your opportunity for a casual Q&A with counselor
