CAREERS WITH CHILDREN
If your juniors or seniors are considering a career involving children,
make sure they know about the new "Careers with Children" course that
includes an internship at a local children's program. Interested
students should talk to Mrs. Klein in B-23 or their guidance counselor
now.
JUNIOR BONDING (FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS)
Junior leadership is asking for junior parents to volunteer as
chaperones for the upcoming picnic this Friday, January 19, from 6-7:30
p.m. They would also like to borrow a few barbeques. Email Maddie
Morey at mrmory at gmail.com if you can help. The event is free to all
juniors and includes hotdogs, hamburgers, music, and a whole lot of '08
fun.
2007 YEARBOOKS
Yearbook prices are going up on January 19, so order your yearbook
before prices increase. Yearbook order forms are available on line at
the M-A website. You can either download an order form or pay with a
credit card on line! You can also go directly to Jostens at
http://shop.jostens.com/customer.asp?CID=130520&mscssid=FWVFBWF2SGP99GVL
477PHM5RULSUAMH1 (be careful if you copy/paste the foregoing into your
browser-some of the letters may drop off the end and will have to be
manually appended). Price for the yearbook is $65 until January 19.
If you used a check to pay for your yearbook, please keep your returned
check. This is the only proof of your order and your only receipt. You
can also email M-A yearbook at ma_yearbook at yahoo.com and ask if your
order has gone through.
ROBOTICS
The robotics competition for 2007, Rack and Roll, has begun. The
nationally-award winning M-A team invites interested families to attend
our next parent meeting scheduled for Saturday, January 20 in room S-1
at 9 a.m. Students curious about robotics can find out more by
attending the Friday lunch meetings in Sean Ward's classroom, C-4.
DREAM BIG...BUT GET SOME SLEEP FIRST
Join us Tuesday, January 23 from 7-8:30 p.m. in the M-A library as M-A
students, parents, faculty, and William C. Dement, a leading authority
on sleep disorders present a panel discussion on Sleep Challenges and
our M-A Teens. This panel will be moderated by sleep expert Mark R.
Rosekind, president of Alertness Solutions, and will include data for
our own M-A students. Teens are welcome to attend too.
Questions? Please call Pam Stoner (327-4020) or Julie Brody (326-1210)
ADVANCED MATH
Parents of students planning to take AP calculus or statistics should
join teacher Gregg Whitnah for a meeting on Tuesday, January 23 at 7
p.m. in D-20 for information about the different options.
DARFUR: YOU CAN HELP
Come to an informational gathering about helping the victims in Darfur
on Friday, January 26 in the J building. Stanford students will be
discussing the issues, and there will be a fundraising raffle with
awesome prizes and proceeds aiding Darfur victims.
IS YOUR STUDENT PLANNING TO PLAY A SPORT IN THE SPRING?
All student athletes, including those currently playing a winter sport,
need to submit their sports packets by Friday, January 26. No
exceptions! Tryouts for spring sports begin on Monday, January 29, and
are open only to students who have completed and turned in their
packets.
Note: all athletes must have medical clearance forms signed by their
doctors. This is often the hardest form to complete, as it usually
entails a trip to the doctor and perhaps a checkup. So if your student
has not had a physical within the last year, make that appointment
pronto and avoid a last minute heartbreak.
GETTING READY FOR COLLEGE 101
Your sophomores, juniors, and seniors may want to attend the Skyline
College workshops on Saturday, February 10 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for
sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Workshops will focus on paying for
college, writing personal statements for college applications, choosing
a career path, ensuring college success, and more. University
representatives will be present to answer questions. The cost is $12
for preregistered students, $15 at the door; the fee includes lunch and
materials. Tell your students to stop by the guidance counselors'
office or career center for more information.
FINISH STRONG: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We invite all parents to donate a few hours to support the senior
class's special challenge event, Finish Strong, scheduled for Tuesday,
February 20 and Thursday, February 22 from 7:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. With
your help leading small groups or working on event logistics, we can
make a real difference in the lives of our own young adults. Choose the
day you would like to help, plan to attend a training session on
Saturday, February 10 from 9 to 10 a.m., and email Margie Lawrence at
mlawrence at mppc.org, Judy Hood at summerhood at sbcglobal.net, or Stacy
Fredericksen at sfisherfred at yahoo.com to get more info or sign up.
STRESSED OUT STUDENTS (AND PARENTS)
The M-A PTA invites you to attend an evening with Denise Pope, founder
of Stanford University's SOS (Stressed Out Students) project, on
February 12 at 7 p.m. in the J building. She will be joined by a panel
of M-A students to discuss the SOS project, the effects of stress on
students, and the ways in which we can work to help our students deal
with pressure. You will also find out about M-A's own PTA-sponsored SOS
Task Force. For more information, go to
http://sosconference.stanford.edu/index.htm or read a recent fact sheet
on Stressed Out Students at
http://sosconference.stanford.edu/sos-fact-sheet.pdf.
RSVP to HVinick at seq.org or 322-5311 x 5114
WIILLY WONKA WINTER FORMAL
Save the date for the winter formal: February 23. Tickets go on sale
for PAL students on January 22 through January 26. Toil for Tickets is
available for students who want to earn their winter formal tickets.
They need to sign up with Mrs. Todd in B-20. Each hour of work for a
staff member outside class hours earns a $10 credit. Students should
not let the lack of dollars stand in the way of dancing the night away.
SPORTS
***Note that all students planning to participate in spring sports must
turn in completed packets by January 26. See the first item in the
eNotes for more information***
