April 28: annual golf tournament

PARENTS OF JUNIORS AND SOPHOMORES: SAT SUBJECT EXAMS

Subject exam classes will be offered, depending on interest, in math, U.S H=
istory, biology, and chemistry beginning in May. If your students are int=
erested, they need to sign up during lunch this Wednesday, April 18, in roo=
m D-20. They need to bring their application forms from the Trivocis, sign=
ed by you, and an optional check payable to the Foundation for the Future. =
For more information or the application form, read the article in the Marc=
h Trivocis. (downloadable at http://www.mabears.org//component/option,com_d=
ocman/task,cat_view/gid,29/Itemid,34/ ) =

Note that signing up for the classes does not register your student for the=
exams themselves. You must sign up for those separately by going to www.c=
ollegeboard.com. Although the deadline for the June 2 exams is April 27, =
the earlier you sign up, the greater the likelihood that you will find spac=
e in a local school and not have to drive to San Francisco (or farther) tha=
t day. =

Note also that students need to indicate how many tests they are taking on =
June 2 when they complete the online registration. They can wait until Jun=
e 2 to indicate which exams they want to take, but if they sign up for only=
two exams, for example, they can only take 1 or 2; they cannot take three =
that day. =

WE SAVED THE BEST FOR LAST! =

The final PTA parent education session of the year, "Challenges of Teen Sle=
ep: Results of the M-A Survey," will be presented in the M-A Library tomorr=
ow, April 18 from 7pm-8:30pm. Come hear Dr. Mark Rosekind, deliver survey r=
esults, share concrete strategies for healthy teen sleep, and lead a lively=
discussion on next steps for improving the sleep status of our own M-A stu=
dents. With your participation, it will be an informative and empowering me=
eting. Don't miss it! Questions? Contact Pam Stoner, pastoner at yahoo.com, 32=
7-4020 or Julie Brody, julie at brodyfamily.net, 326-1210.

Yes, you may get dirty, but there is also a profound sense of accomplishme=
nt when you do physical labor (Mr. Zito, I swear it feels good to get dirty=
 sometimes).

You can sign up ahead of time with Jenna Carson, Student Activities Directo=
r, jcarson at seq.org or just show up on Saturday morning ready to work! And b=
ring friends, of course. We would love to see teens and adults working side=

brating the approaching year end. While we want them to have fun, we also w=
ant them to be safe. Visit www.mafacts.org for information about alcohol us=
e that you can discuss with your teen. The information at http://www.mafac=
ts.org/html/For%20Teens/Subtopics/Driving.html discusses the issues surroun=
ding a teen's decision to be a designated driver, describes the risks that =
designated drivers take, and offers alternatives to the designated driver r=
ole.

JUNIOR/SENIOR PROM: TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW!

This year's prom is scheduled for Friday, May 11 at the San Francisco Regen=
cy Center at 1300 Van Ness Avenue from 8 pm to midnight. =

Tickets are now on sale for PAL singles only; your student can buy one for =

BADMINTON
Last year, M-A Varsity Badminton was undefeated and won the Ocean Division =
Championship, but this year it looked like there would not even be a team. =
A week after the official try-out season began, M-A (scheduled to compete i=
n the tougher Bay Division this year) was still without a head coach. Howev=
er, senior Carson Rosenberg led a campaign which resulted in the hiring of =
former M-A badminton player (and jazz trumpeter) Bill Smolik. Coach Hargis =
was coaxed out of retirement to be his assistant, and Stacy Fredericksen, A=
lthea Tomijima, and Kim Reed joined the fray bringing invaluable organizati=
onal abilities and effort.

The results speak for themselves. The 50-player strong team is holding prac=
tices and representing M-A in the Bay Division, and although the Ocean Divi=
sion Champion usually fares poorly in the tougher division, M-A is tied for=
first place half-way through the season! Singles players Evan Fredericksen=
, Harrison Li, and Michael Williams are undefeated, as are doubles teams Co=
lin Smith & Daniel Chao, Roscoe Elliot & Eric Weiss, and Tom Kozlowski & Ga=
bi Jubran. As evidenced by M-A's recent 11-4 victory over previously undefe=
ated SSF, the girls are playing strong this year too. Parents have chipped =
in to hire a new assistant coach, and M-A has become "the team to beat" in =
the Bay Division this year with prospects for a bright badminton future. =

The badminton bears travel to Westmoor today in hopes of finishing the firs=
t half of the season on a winning note.

BASEBALL

The varsity team took third place in the Las Vegas tournament over spring b=
reak! The tournament saw Peter Verhaar go 3 for 3 with a single, double and=
home run in the first game followed by Matt Mosher blasting two home runs =
as well. The final game came down to the wire when Daniel Johnston hit a gr=
and slam! This was all followed by Joe Cain hitting a walk off triple to wi=
n the game. Great pitching efforts came from Kris Anderson, Peter Verhaar, =
Geoff Pound, and Jordan Sanvictores. M-A takes on Capuchino this week.

GOLF

Our M-A Boy golfers successfully avenged their only season loss by defeatin=
g Menlo last Monday by a team match score of 190 to 198. Leading the pack o=
n the 9 hole, par 35 course at Menlo Country Club were Nick Sako (33), Jami=
e Walsh (35), and Jake Hall Toy (39) The Bears are the 2007 PAL Bay Divisio=
n champions, with a 7-1 record for the regular season and 10-1 overall. T=
hey will compete in another tournament, the Fog City Classic, tomorrow, Apr=
il 18. Individual PAL playoffs will take place the week of April 30, follo=
wed by CCS playoffs the week of May 7!

LACROSSE

The JV girls outlasted a gritty Menlo team with a hard fought 12-11 victory=
, extending their record to 11-0. Alex Fanelli and Monserrat Benavides prov=
ided all of the scoring with seven and five goals respectively. Monika Deck=
er and Molly Murphy provided amazing defense and were instrumental in keepi=
ng the Menlo team away from their goal, and getting the ball back into M-A'=
s possession for a hard fought win over Menlo School.

Meanwhile, the girls' varsity completed a regular-season sweep of Menlo Sch=
ool 7-6 to remain undefeated in PAL league play. This victory marks the fir=
st time that the Bears have swept the season series from the Knights. The =
defense played an outstanding game, constantly stopping drives by the Menlo=
offense. Goalie Julia Robinson kept the girls in the game, making 16 saves=
, many on point blank shots. Senior Sam Bassin had 4 goals for the Bears. T=
enley Breen added 1 goal and 2 assists, Adrian Holland had 1 goal and one a=
ssist, and Kayla Ushman put 1 shot
into the Menlo net. The girls were in action at the Western States Tournam=
ent at Stanford last Saturday taking third place.

The boys' varsity lost a heartbreaker to cross town rival Menlo Wednesday 8=
-6. The team battled valiantly; David Merrill stuffed two goals, Charlie Fi=
tz, Alex Johnson, Mark Gregory, and Sergio Zamora blasted one each, with as=
sists by David McLaughlin, Charlie Fitz and Will Hyrne. Bo Dunnahoo-Kirsch =
protected the net with 16 saves.

TENNIS

With one week left in the official PAL season, previous rainouts force the =
Bears to play (and win) a match every day this week to qualify for the PAL =
and CCS playoffs. The netters got off to a strong start when they played H=
illsdale Monday and came away with a 7-0 shutout! All in all, out of 7 bes=
t of 3 set matches, the Bears lost only a total of 7 games. A dominating p=
erformance and just what they need to start what is shaping up to be a grue=
ling week! =

The Bears take on Mills today at M-A. Come by the courts and check out the=
newly renovated tennis facility while rooting for your Bears tennis team t=
oday. =

TRACK AND FIELD

Track and field had a phenomenal weekend despite the downpours. Freshman As=
hby Cogun took first place in the long jump for our girls' frosh-soph team =
with a jump of 16'. Varsity member Stephanie Lee Took first place in the t=
riple jump with a jump of 34'3. Kim O'Donnell took first place in the long=
jump with a jump of 16'3. Kaitlyn McGhee took first place and ran a perso=
nal best with a time of 58 flat in the open 400. =

Kim O'Donnell who last year beat our school record in the 300 hurdles with =
a time of 46.54 bettered her time and still holds the school record with a =
time of 46.30 and if that wasn't enough she beat the record in the 100 hurd=
les with a time of 15.40. Way to go Kim!

Our varsity girls 4x100 relay team broke a 22 year old school record of 48.=
30 with a time of 48.13. Let's hear it for our 4x100 relay dream team: Keia=
nna Talton, Christina Dixon, Dominique Green and Caprice Powell. This relay=
team is now ranked #1 in CCS!

Congratulations also to Coach Victor Hudson who was selected as the Track C=
CS Honor Coach for 2007.
