HIGHLIGHTS OF WHAT'S HAPPENING (read the eNotes for more information) -
Football: varsity game at San Mateo on September 29 at 3:15. Tickets are
on sale now for the Homecoming Dance scheduled for October 14
The countdown to our annual Fashion Show fundraiser has started: only 23
days until October 21
OPEN MIC
Our first Open Mic night of the year will be tonight at 7 pm in the
drama room, C-16. Students are invited to come perform music, poetry,
stand-up comedy....anything you've got as long as it's less than three
minutes and completely original. Everyone is invited to come watch, and
the price is a mere $2 at the door.
YOUTH REACH
The City of Redwood City is inviting high school juniors and seniors to
an exciting new program called Youth REACH. The program features five
interactive and motivating afternoon sessions that provide students with
a great overview of public sector career options, including
presentations by city staff about their jobs, training, skill building
tips, panel discussions with students that have worked for Redwood City,
a career and education fair, and a lot more. Redwood City wants to help
high school students plan for their future and consider a career in the
public sector. The program starts in late October and the city is
recruiting participants now. Please phone 780-5956 or visit Redwood
City's website at www.redwoodcity.org for more information.
ARE YOU TIRED, RUN DOWN, LISTLESS???
Join the happy, peppy people who have already ordered Innisbrook gift
wrap or candy. Did you know 50% of the sales will help raise funds for
drama productions and M-A Band needs? Don't wait a moment: rush to
www.innisbrook.com to view the items for sale. You can avoid shipping
fees and sales taxes (and help us meet our minimum sale order) by giving
your order directly to a band or drama student by October 6. The
student will deliver the items to you just in time for the holidays!
Questions? Email Dianne Jensen RGJDMD at aol.com
P.S. If seeing this cheerful gift wrap does not cure your fatigue, be
sure to read the next item in the eNotes.
YOUR CHILD'S BIGGEST DEFICIT
Get this on your calendars now! Next month, the M-A PTA will be
presenting a special session with Mark R. Rosekind, founder and
president of Alertness Solutions. The topic is Adolescence: Sleep
Challenges of the Teenage Years, and he will be discussing the basics of
adolescent sleep needs, techniques for calculating your child's sleep
deficit, reasons that sleep is sooo important, and tips that will help
you help your teen achieve better sleep habits. The program includes a
Q&A.
Is it possible for your teen to get enough sleep? Find out on Tuesday,
October 24 from 7-8:30 p.m. in the M-A library when Dr. Rosekind, an
internationally recognized expert on sleep performance and practical
strategies, shares his wisdom with us. Questions? Please contact Julie
Brody (julie at brodyfamily.net) or Pam Stoner
(pastoner at yahoo.com)
EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT BETTY CROCKER (OR MARTHA STEWART, FOR THAT MATTER)
If you like to bake, you can help the Fashion Show, our school's main
fundraiser, by contributing your homemade pies, cakes, cupcakes, bundt
cakes, brownies, cookies (2 dozen minimum), breads, rice krispie treats,
muffins, fudge, and any other specialties to the parent sponsored bake
sale. Homemade goodies are preferred, store-bought items are acceptable
too. Get out your cookbooks and plan to drop off your contributions on
Friday, October 20 from 3-6 p.m. or Saturday, October 21 at 9 a.m. Email
Wendy Rohn at jwhsa at aol.com - she needs at least 70 families to bring
goodies, and you need not have a senior to participate..
We also need volunteers to help wrap and price the baked items on
Friday, October 20 and the morning of October 21 and to help sell the
treats (though they'll practically sell themselves) before and after the
shows! Volunteers, please contact Jody Horowitz at
jodyhorowitz at comcast.net
ESL TUTORS NEEDED
The ESL classes need a few topnotch volunteers to help students during
classes. No previous tutoring experience or knowledge of foreign
languages is required. It's a great opportunity to work directly with
the students, primarily on English language skills, once a week. We
have already filled around 30 tutoring requests from the teachers this
fall, and we are still looking for tutors at the following times:
ESL 1 with Marei Kane: Thursdays, noon-1:40
ESL 2 with JJ Lee Gilbert: Monday, Tuesday, Friday periods 2, 3, and 5,
Wednesday period 2,
Thursday periods 3 and 5
Connections with Angelica Rodriguez: Wednesdays, 10-11.
Contact Sally Fundakowski at salfun at comcast.net or 325-7615 to sign up
or to ask any questions.
IT ISN'T TOO LATE
Didn't get a 2006 yearbook? E copies will be available for $30 each in
room E-21 at lunch or after school on October 3, 4, and 6. First
come...
HOMECOMING IS COMING
Your student won't want to miss M-A in Wonderland, this year's
Homecoming Dance, due to unfold at Bay Meadows from 8 - midnight on
Saturday, October 14. Tickets are on sale now in front of the
Leadership room, B-21 during lunch. The price is $30 for singles and
$55 for couples. The prices will rise (and tickets will sell out) so
make sure your student buys tickets very very soon. (Nothing worse than
having a moping teen around the house on Homecoming night.)
JUST THE FACTS, FOLKS
Focus on Alcohol...Committee on Teen Safety (FACTS) is a newly formed
committee of the M-A PTA working to provide information to parents for
discussion with their teens about underage drinking health and safety
issues.
If you are interested in participating in FACTS Forums (informal
gatherings of interested parents), please contact FACTS co-chairs: Lisa
Bohannon at lfredbohan at aol.com or Lily Hurlimann at lhurl at aol.com
OLD BACKPACKS? UNOPENED TOILETRIES? DON'T THROW THEM OUT!
Once again, OUTREACH is collecting backpacks and clothes to give to the
homeless, along with toiletries, blankets, hats and scarves. Bring your

its goal of collecting over 100 backpacks.
SCHOOL ATER SCHOOL
Are your 10th, 11th, or 12th graders missing credits in English, math,
history, or biology? You might want to encourage them to talk to their
guidance advisor about making up those credits in the new after school
program.
COLLEGE INFORMATION NIGHT

at 7:30 p.m. in the M-A library. This is an opportunity for parents of

anything and everything related to college. RSVP by calling Hermine
Vinic at 322-5311 x5114 or email Hvinick at seq.org

English and social studies classrooms to see when their photos have been
scheduled. No need to go to the studio: photos will be taken in the
former RISE room. Questions? See Ms Woolf in E-21 during sixth period
or after school.
