PARENTS OF SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS: IT'S PSAT TIME
Students need to register for the PSAT, scheduled for October 21 at M-A,
by the September 26 deadline. Note that this test is given only once a
year, and it is used to screen juniors for the National Merit
scholarship program. Sophomores can sign up with their English
teachers, while juniors should register with their U.S. history
teachers. Please make your check for $23 payable to M-A PSAT and
include your student's ID and first and last name on the check.
HELP FEED STARVING FASHION SHOW ATTENDEES
If you like to bake, you can help the Fashion Show, our school's main
fundraiser, by contributing your homemade pies, cakes, cupcakes, bundt
cakes, brownies, cookies (2 dozen minimum), breads, rice krispie treats,
muffins, fudge, and any other specialties to the parent sponsored bake
sale. Homemade goodies are preferred, store-bought items are acceptable
too. Get out your cookbooks and plan to drop off your contributions on
Friday, October 20 from 3-6 p.m. or Saturday, October 21 at 9 a.m. Email
Wendy Rohn at jwhsa at aol.com - she needs at least 70 families to bring
goodies, and you need not have a senior to participate..
We also need volunteers to help wrap and price the baked items on
Friday, October 20 and the morning of October 21 and to help sell the
treats (though they'll practically sell themselves) before and after the
shows! Volunteers, please contact Jody Horowitz at
jodyhorowitz at comcast.net
ESL TUTORS NEEDED
The ESL classes need a few topnotch volunteers to help students during
classes. No previous tutoring experience or knowledge of foreign
languages is required. It's a great opportunity to work directly with
the students, primarily on English language skills, once a week. We
have already filled around 30 tutoring requests from the teachers this
fall, and we are still looking for tutors at the following times:
ESL 1 with Marei Kane: Thursdays, noon-1:40
ESL 2 with JJ Lee Gilbert: Monday, Tuesday, Friday periods 2, 3, and 5,
Wednesday period 2,
Thursday periods 3 and 5
Connections with Angelica Rodriguez: Wednesdays, 10-11.
Contact Sally Fundakowski at salfun at comcast.net or 325-7615 to sign up
or to ask any questions.
FOCUS ON ALCOHOL...COMMITTEE ON TEEN SAFETY (FACTS) IS...
...a newly formed committee of the M-A PTA working to provide
information to parents for discussion with their teens about underage
drinking health and safety issues.
If you are interested in participating in FACTS Forums (informal
gatherings of interested parents), please contact FACTS co-chairs: Lisa
Bohannon at lfredbohan at aol.com or Lily Hurlimann at lhurl at aol.com

OLD BACKPACKS? UNOPENED TOILETRIES? DON'T THROW THEM OUT!
Once again, OUTREACH is collecting backpacks and clothes to give to the
homeless, along with toiletries, blankets, hats and scarves. Bring your
donations to Project Backpack in the office so that OUTREACH can meet
its goal of collecting over 100 backpacks.
WRAP IT UP
The annual wrapping paper sale has started, just in time for the
holidays. Place an order with any M-A band or drama student. All
proceeds help to defray cost for their future contests and productions.
Any questions contact Dianne Jensen at RGJDMD at aol.com or650-219-5584.

HELP THE DEBATE CLUB
Menlo-Atherton's acclaimed debate club meets on Mondays and Tuesdays
after school. If you have debate experience and would like to help,
call Sheila McKay at 327-8561 or Catherine Habiger at 364-0383. You can
also contact teacher Patrick Maier in room C-13.
HITTING THE HIGH NOTES
Teacher Eric Kujawsky (Dr. K), who started a singing club last year,
would like to grow the vocal music program. "There's enough interest
and talent," he says, "to have a general ensemble plus an elite a
cappella choir." He is getting the word out at school, but students
don't always hear the announcements. If your child is a budding
vocalist, pass the word along. He would also welcome help from pianists
and guitarists and anyone else with an interest in growing these groups.

TENNIS
The girls' varsity team continued their dominance of the top-rated Bay
League with a 6-1 drubbing of Tier 1 Bay League Burlingame, allowing the
Bears to finish the preseason undefeated. Marjorie Adams, Marietta
Tuinetoa, Brooke Keating and Janine Kaufer all cruised to victory, while
Emma Sharer/Meg Haley and Heidi Galbraith/Anna Ongko sealed the win with
straight set victories! JV/frosh/soph also cruised to victory 7-3.
Despite their placement in the Tier 2 Ocean League, the team played only
Tier 1 Bay League opponents in the preseason. League play begins on
Thursday against Half Moon Bay.
FOOTBALL
Give a cheer for our frosh/soph team on their 49-0 victory last Friday
over Capuchino. Russell Perkins, Rod Nash, Vaughn Smith, and David
McLaughlin led the way, giving the team a 2-0 start to the season.
The M-A Bears take on Silver Creek at home this Saturday, September 23
in a triple header with the freshmen playing at 11 a.m., frosh/soph at
1, and varsity at 3:15. Come out and cheer them on as they continue
their undefeated season!
