DON'T MISS THE FIRST MEETING... =


...of the 2008-07 M-A PTA. Join us this Thursday, September 7 at 9 a.m. (or=
 earlier, to network) in the RISE room at the back of the J building. We wi=
ll vote on the proposed budget and receive updates on the upcoming Fashion =
Show and Freshman Family Welcome. Our first guest speaker of the year will =
be M-A's academic vice-principal, Steve Lippi. We look forward to seeing yo=
u there. =


NOT TOO SOON TO PLAN FOR THE SUMMER OF 2007 =

Liane Strub, AP English and AP Art History teacher, is organizing a Europea=
n summer study tour for M-A students next summer. The tour offers an intens=
ive historical and cultural introduction Rome, Florence, Venice, Paris and =
London. Students and parents who want to learn more about this opportunity =
should join Liane for an introductory meeting tomorrow, September 6, from 7=
 to 8 p.m. in room C-15, or email lstrub at seq.org for more information. =


DOES YOUR STUDENT LIKE TO TINKER WITH COMPUTERS? =

The M-A computer repair class meets on Mondays from 3:20 to 6:35 p.m. start=
ing soon. In addition to learning about computer repair, your student will =
earn five high school credits, acquire three college credits, and fulfill t=
he school's technology requirement. Interested students must talk to their =
guidance advisors by Friday, September 8. =


JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT YOU COULDN'T CRAM ONE MORE THING ONTO YOUR CALENDAR =

Only nine more days until September 14 and Menlo-Atherton's annual Back to =
School night. Take advantage of the opportunity to meet and greet your stud=
ent's teachers and navigate the school. The festivities begin with a tour o=
f Pride Hall at 6:30, followed by a 7 p.m. meeting for all parents in the J=
 building, and culminating with the highlight of the evening: a fast-paced =
excursion through your child's daily class schedule. Don't forget to ask yo=
ur student for a class schedule, wear comfy shoes, and bring a pen to take =
notes. =


FRESHMAN FAMILY WELCOME =

Welcome to M-A, 2010 parents! We are so glad you are here! The leadership c=
lass is invites you to the third annual freshmen family potluck dinner on F=
riday September 15 from 6 to 7 p.m. Please bring a dish that will feed 6-8 =
people as follows: if your student's last name begins with the letters A-H,=
 bring an entr=E9e; I-Sh, bring a salad; Si-Z, a dessert. We will be sellin=
g soft drinks for $1.00 to raise money for future freshman-only events at M=
-A. We look forward to seeing you near the library for dinner. Questions? C=

Freshmen should stick around for their first dance, Mardi Gras style, on th=
e Green starting at 7 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door, and sodas, sna=
cks, and juice smoothies will also be available. All freshmen are encourage=
d to attend. =


DANCE DANCE =

The back-to-school dance for all students is scheduled for Friday, Septembe=
r 22 in the J building, with tickets available in front of the leadership r=
oom at lunch. =


GRAD NITE =

Yep, the planning for Grad Nite 2007 is already underway. Parents are invit=
ed to attend the organizational meeting on Tuesday, September 26 from 7-9 a=
t M-A to find out more and learn how to help make this incredible party a s=
afe, sober, and fun celebration for every wonderful member of the M-A class=
 of 2007. =

PARENTS OF SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS: IT'S PSAT TIME =

Students need to register for the PSAT, scheduled for October 21 at M-A, by=
 the September 26 deadline. Note that this test is given only once a year, =
and it is used to screen juniors for the National Merit scholarship program=
. Sophomores can sign up with their English teachers, while juniors should =
register with their U.S. history teachers. Please make your check for $23 p=
ayable to M-A PSAT and include your student's ID and first and last name on=
 the check. =


GOT A SENIOR IN YOUR HOUSE? =

Seniors need to make an appointment with Prestige Photographers, who are ta=
king senior portraits. Deadline: October 11. If you cannot find the informa=
tion, the number for Prestige is posted outside E-21. =


LEGGINGS ARE BACK? MINIS ARE EVEN SHORTER? TELL ME MORE! =

The annual Fashion Show, featuring senior students as models and fashions f=
rom local merchants, will once again enchant the masses this October 21. Th=
e Fashion Show is the primary fundraiser for M-A's PTA, with hundreds of vo=
lunteer opportunities available to fit your schedule and interests. Parents=
 from all classes are encouraged to join in the fun and help with a job. We=
 have filled all chair positions and now need committee members. =

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! =

Got a few minutes (or more) to spare? We have a variety of jobs available, =
and one is sure to fit your schedule and talents. =


*GOT A CAR? A PHONE? AND AN EXTRA HALF HOUR?
We need help delivering over 40 donated computers to the homes of deserving=
 M-A students. We provide the students' contact information and address. Yo=
u pick up one computer (or several), make appointments with the students, a=
nd deliver the computers to their homes. They will carry the computer from =
your car--no heavy lifting required. Contact Sue Kayton at kayton at alum.mit.=

*GRAPHICS STARS: THIS ONE'S FOR YOU
PTA Co-President Leslie Airola needs a volunteer to design and produce camp=

*PHOTOGRAPHERS
Want to give your camera a workout? The PTA would like you to create a disp=
lay board that includes pictures of all teachers and staff members. You wil=
l need to take the photos, then assemble them in alphabetical order. Your w=
ork will be prominently displayed on campus for all to admire. Email Leslie=

Sign up to help with M-A's incredible annual freshmen challenge. If you can=
 lead a small group or help with event logistics, please sign up to work on=
 campus on Monday, October 30 and/or Tuesday, October 31 between 7:15 am an=
d 3 p.m. =

A training session for small group leaders is scheduled for Saturday, Octob=
er 28 from 9-10 a.m. at M-A. =

Those four years of high school zip by quickly, and before you know it, you=
r student will be out of the nest. Prepare those wings for takeoff with the=

ill receive occasional emails discussing colleges, scholarships, financial =
aid, and other post-high school items of interest. Parents should be sure t=
o join only the PARENT list; there are two students-only lists (one for jun=
iors and one for seniors) as well. =


YEARBOOK ORDERS =

Only nine months until summer vacation--but you can order your yearbooks no=
w. Yearbook order forms are now available on line at the M-A website. You c=
an either download an order form or pay with a credit card on line! You can=
 also go directly to Jostens at http://www.shop.jostens.com (follow the ste=
p-by-step directions, and don't forget that M-A is in Atherton). Price for =
the yearbook is $65 until January 19. If you have questions or would like t=

FOOTBALL =

Frosh triumph in four-way scrimmage! The M-A Bears freshman football team, =
including 17 players, rolled over rivals Woodside, Carlmont and Terra Nova =
at Carlmont last Saturday =

Varsity football will be playing a don't-miss-it home opener this Saturday,=
 September 9 on the M-A field at 5:15 p.m. JV plays at 3 p.m. These games w=
ill provide an exciting start to the season and we hope to see lots of fans=
 in the stands. Earlier in the day, the frosh will play their first game ag=
ainst Riordan at Riordan at 10 a.m. =
