Following a comprehensive interview process, the new Head Varsity Football Coach for Menlo-Atherton High School has been named. The interview team was comprised of the Menlo-Atherton High School principal, an assistant principal, the athletic director, a junior football player, parents, and two former NFL players. There were six highly qualified candidates who were interviewed for the position. By a unanimous decision, the interview team offered the position of Head Varsity Football Coach to Robert Sykes, currently from Reno, Nevada. Mr. Sykes will oversee all the daily operations contributing to the development of the football program at Menlo-Atherton High School. Besides having excellent experience, he understands the importance of developing and maintaining a good relationship with parents, boosters, and alumni as well as his peers in the coaching profession.

Robert Sykes is a native Californian who was born in San Jose. In high school he was a first string, all-league quarterback for St. Louis High in Hawaii and prior to that an all-league quarterback for Aptos High. During high school he was also a starting varsity basketball guard. He played quarterback for St. Mary's College and helped to lead the University of Arkansas to their 1978 Orange Bowl Championship.

Mr. Sykes’ prior experience includes Head Varsity Coach for Los Altos High and Kings Academy. He has also served as Assistant Varsity coach of quarterbacks and defensive ends at Valley Christian High School. His most recent position was as offensive assistant/quality control coach for the University of Nevada at Reno.

Mr. Sykes will include veteran Earl Locke as well as Don Brady and Adam Mapuatuli to assist him in his job.

Menlo-Atherton High School is proud to welcome Robert Sykes, his wife Olga, and their daughter Brianna to the Menlo-Atherton High School community.
