Citizen oversight of local government is the cornerstone of democracy in the United States. Today, nearly 100,000 citizens serve local communities as school board members, the largest category of elected public officials in the United States. Governing boards provide direction and over sight for the professionals who manage the day to day operations of the school. School board members also provide accountability to the community.
There are four major board roles. These are establishing a vision; maintaining an effective and efficient structure; ensuring accountability, and providing community leadership as advocates for children, the school district, and public schools. Authority for these roles is granted to the board as a whole, not each member individually. Board members work together as a governance team with the Superintendent to make decisions that will best serve all the students in the community.
The Sequoia Board has five members, each of whom serves for four years, and a student trustee who serves for one school year. There are no term limits for elected board members. The Board meets the first and third Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m.. Please see agenda for location information. The meetings are open to the public and there is time at the beginning of each meeting for the public to address the board on items not on the agenda.
