Guidance Counseling Office Print E-mail

Carlmont's main goal is to graduate students who are well prepared to take their next steps. Our Guidance Department helps students keep on track and makes them aware of college and career opportunities. The Guidance Department helps all students achieve the District's Gradution Requirements (District 220) .

Need help planning your classes? The 2007-2008 Program Planning Handbook is here to help.  This handbookcontains information on graduation requirements, attendanc, courses, support programs and more!  (PDF format only.)

The work actually starts with eighth graders in feeder middle schools as we help them plan for their first year of high school and it continues until the last diploma and scholarship have been handed out at graduation.

Guidance Department with a staff of four guidance counselors:

  • Meets with students and/or parents at least twice a year to discuss which classes best suit the student's college plans and personal interests.
  • Assists qualified students with concurrent enrollment at community colleges, earning both high school and college credits simultaneously.
  • Writes and helps secure letters of recommendation, transcripts, and other materials for college applications.
  • Provides referrals to outside support services such as tutors and psychological counselors.

College and Career Center provides:

  •  Individual appointments with a College Advisor on selecting and applying to public, private/independent, and out-of-state four-year colleges or two-year community colleges.
  • A series of workshops for students on strategies and recommendations for creating a competitive academic portfolio for college admission.
  • Informational evening and lunchtime workshops for students and parents on planning for, selecting, and applying to four-year colleges.
  • College representative visits from private and public four-year colleges and universities from western (i.e. UC, CSU, and private), northern, eastern, and Midwest regions.
  • SAT and ACT college entrance exam testing information.
  • Individual assistance, catalogs, handouts, and evening workshops on seeking and applying for financial aid and/or scholarhips.
  • Notification via daily announcements, classroom presentations, and a College and Career web site informing students and parents about upcoming events hosted by the center and application deadlines.

Additional services offered to students include:

  • On-campus SAT practice tests and evaluation by a recognized test preperation company
  • On-campus PSAT testing
  • Assistance by the English Department with college application essays
  • Extensive work experience opportunities

Career Pathways

In an effort to help students identify careers, interests, college majors, and training, our Career Pathways program offers internships, job shadowing, work experience, and career fairs as a bridge between high school and post-secondary education. Specific pathways include: Business Technology, Health and Medical Services, and Visual and Performing Arts. Students may also develop their own pathways.

Text Messaging Alert System

The Belmont Safe Schools Text Messaging Alert System, allows students, parents, relatives & school staff to receive important messages from their school or from Belmont PD, over their mobile devices (cell phone, smart phone, PDA, etc...). The system can be used to advise of school closures, traffic issues, and incidents on or near campus, etc... Because it is a text message, which goes to a mobile device, subscribers can receive the message if they are in class, the library, their dorm/apt or off campus. Subscribers sign up at their school's website and are in the system until they remove themselves, so for example, an incoming student and their family only have to sign up once during their years as a student at that school. Subscribers can remove themselves at any time. This system received initial funding from the City of Belmont as part of its Disaster Preparedness efforts and is maintained through the Belmont Safe Schools Program.
