Developer Fees

Effective January 1, 1987, Assembly Bill 2926, Section 53080 of the California Government Code authorizes school districts to levy "School Developer Fees" on new, remodels or additions for residential, and commercial/industrial development projects.

Legislation also provides that "No building permits may be issued until the district's certify that any fees due have been paid."

The Maintenance and Operations department of the Sequoia Union High School District, collects school developer fees for both the Belmont/Redwood Shores, Las Lomitas, Menlo Park, Portola Valley, Ravenswood, Redwood City, San Carlos and Woodside Elementary school district's and the Sequoia Union High School District (SUHSD).

You must submit to our office only your original, full size, to scale Floor Plan sheet(s) located at 1090 Mills Way in Redwood City, the cross street is Broadway. Floor plans must show the existing structure(s) and the proposed new structure(s), including any accessory building(s) and basements. (Please Note: The District will keep your floor plan sheet(s) on file for you for future reference and/or use).

Your construction project will be reviewed by an experienced staff member usually within two (2) days. Fees are calculated based on the total square footage determined from measuring the outside wall perimeters of the structure(s).

The fees are then divided up where 60% goes to the elementary school district and 40% goes to the high school district. Once the fees have been determined, you will receive a phone call from our office to let you know that the fees have been calculated and the dollar amounts for each check to be issued.

As of June 19, 2016, the rate is $3.48 a square foot for residential and $0.56 a square foot for commercial/industrial projects. (See rate schedule for details) Payment is made with two (2)  checks only.

If you are demolishing any structures on the property you entitled to receive a credit for the total square footage that's being demolished, which is deducted from the new square footage.

In order to receive credit for the demo, you must submit with your floor plans, a "Unit Appraisal Record", which can be obtained from the County Assessor's Office, located at 555 County Center, 1st Fl. in Redwood City.

For additional information, please feel free to request a copy of our "Instructions and Procedures" packet from the building department updated May 2017.

If you have additional questions or need assistance, please contact our office Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except holidays, at 650.369.1411, ext. 22203 or 22290.
